JUPITER (AP) — Mat Latos followed his worst start of the spring with his best, helping the Miami Marlins play to a 1-1 tie with the Houston Astros.
Five days after allowing nine runs in three innings to the Mets, Latos rebounded by limiting the Astros to one run in 5 1-3 innings.
“I think you see night and day,” Latos said. “I couldn’t get an out the other day. My last outing my mechanics were completely off. Today everything was downhill.”
While Latos’ improvement was significant, it left room for improvement. He walked two, threw two wild pitches and give up six hits.
Miami’s defense helped Latos, too.
Second baseman Dee Gordon made a sliding backhanded pick of Hank Conger’s grounder to start an inning-ending double play in the second inning.
